Influence. Giannini soon establishes Transamerica Corporation as a holding company for his rapidly expanding financial empire.* He becomes instrumental in bankrolling California’s wine and agricultural industries, Hollywood’s burgeoning movie business, and the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. By 1946, he has created the largest private bank in the world.

Vision. Yet despite his extraordinary success, he cared little of his own personal wealth and had only a modest estate at the time of his death. A.P. Giannini was a titan of American commerce who was always about providing opportunity to ordinary people.

That vision still lives today.

The Quake. April 18, 1906. A catastrophic earthquake shatters the early morning silence in San Francisco. A.P. Giannini, a young banker with a reputation for helping small merchants and immigrant farmers, takes decisive action. As fires bear down on his Bank of Italy, he loads the vault’s gold and money onto a borrowed produce wagon and moves his precious cargo to safety outside the city.

Courage. A.P. is focused on one thing: helping residents rebuild. Within days, on a city dock near North Beach, he creates a makeshift desk of a wooden plank straddling two barrels, and reopens for business. A.P. extends credit to anyone in need, with only a handshake as collateral. With this simple act, based on openness and trust, the reconstruction of San Francisco begins and a remarkable American story is born.
